Ronnie Cohen & the Cape May Forum Chautauqua at the Shore Ronnie Cohen has been a volunteer at Gilda’s
Club South Jersey since the inception of our Teen Program at Absegami High
School six years ago. When she was 16 she lost her mother to breast
cancer and remembers clearly that there was no place to turn because the big
“C” was a big hush, hush. Of the students, who participate in the Teen
Clubs in nine area schools, Ronnie says, “I am so impressed with the caliber
of the kids and what they know—their understanding of the treatment. I
have such empathy with them.” Working closely with Nicole Milan-Tyner,
Teen Program Manager, Ronnie thinks the program hits the right cord between
health education and social work. “It is just what the teens
need. It is hard to gauge that, until you have walked in their shoes.” Ronnie, who is also the Chair of the Cape May
Forum, is launching its inaugural program around the theme “Humor: Can it
Save the World?” this weekend (October 8-11). Together with her
brother-in-law, Danny, the dream is to bring a Chautauqua-like experience to
our neck of the woods—or beach. The moderator and keynote speaker of
the four day event is John Morreall. And a special shout out to Gilda’s
Club SJ facilitator Petie Subin and Noogieland Program Manager Lori Stranges
for their presentations on Sunday morning. Have a look at the fantastic
activities and buy a ticket or two at www.capemayforum.org.
