Welcoming Jane Abbott
Welcome Program Manager Jane Abbott! Jane is on
board and steering the ship we call The Living Room at AtlantiCare
Cancer Care Institute—our satellite program on the second floor of
that beautiful building on English Creek Road.
Jane has assumed the position from Emiri Nakahara who is
leaving this area (sniff, sniff) to move to Washington, D.C. to be
with her husband Wil, as he begins a new position with the W Hotel.
Jane is no stranger to Gilda’s Club South Jersey.
She has been a member since 2006 or, said differently, she became a
member when the Clubhouse was on Shore Road at the Linwood
CC. (Funny how our different locations help us remember
timelines.)
Jane’s participation with us also means that she is no
stranger to cancer. She is a five-year survivor of breast
cancer, finding her way to Gilda’s Club South Jersey when she moved
to Ocean City with her husband, fulfilling a longtime dream.
For many years she worked in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital
system in its referral service and telephone triage After Hours Nurse
Advice Program. As a nurse, she referred her cancer patients
and families to Gilda’s Club as well as to The Wellness Community.
Prior to that she worked primarily in obstetrics from
home health visits to labor and delivery through to working with
postpartum moms. Her work brought her into the non-profit world
at both Booth Maternity Center and The Birth Center of Bryn Mawr.
Working in Philadelphia juxtaposed with going through
arduous cancer treatment gave her and her husband, Chris, the
opportunity to re-evaluate life. They made the decision to move
down to their summer home in Ocean City permanently. After a
few more years of commuting into Philly, enough was enough. She
said that she was just waiting for Gilda’s Club to call!
We are very fortunate to have your boat load of
experience on the team, Jane.
