Wawa Charities Committee and Our Teen Program
Thank you Wawa Charities Committee for recently
selecting Gilda’s Club South Jersey to be a recipient of a $47,700 grant
to support our Teen Program. What a huge shot in the arm.
The Teen Program is a program of social and emotional
support for people ages 13 through 18 years. The grant will
allow us to continue to do our monthly outreach to ten area schools
and once a month at the Clubhouse supporting students who either have
cancer themselves or who have a loved one living with cancer.
In addition, the funding will allow us to continue our
annual Teens Touched by Cancer Writing Contest, which had 100 entries
this year. Stay tuned to this space as we will be announcing
the 2011 winners next week. This year also marks a turning
point in the contest with participants coming from 22 schools all
over southern New Jersey.
The funding will allow for important new programming in
teendom. Starting this month we will be offering a Teen
and Young Adult bereavement group monthly in the
Clubhouse. This group will be facilitated by our Program
Director, Erin McAllister, who, along with Teen Program Manager
Nicole Tyner, has nurtured this program since its beginning.
Next spring, we will be offering a regional one-day
conference for our school partners on the topic of how schools can
and should respond when a member of their community is
diagnosed. So often the schools are on the front line when
significant and difficult issues arise in a family. Yet often
they do not have the training to know what to do. That will be
the focus of the conference—to give our local schools the
resources they need when cancer comes close to home or to school.
The development of Gilda’s Teen Clubs has been an
amazing journey, beginning seven years ago with one high
school. That first meeting was fateful. Close to 60
students showed-up, after the well intentioned principle was pretty
sure no one would attend. Later that year we received a
one year grant through National Institute of Health, thanks to the
support of Congressman Frank LoBiondo, to expand our effort. We
have never looked back.
Now, thanks to Wawa Charities Committee, we are able to
kick it up a notch for our Teens.
