Two Great Seminars in Recognition of
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Wednesday, March 16 at 6–8 PM - AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute
Learn about the surgical advances in the treatment of
colorectal cancer. This is a great opportunity to ask questions
in an unrushed supportive setting. That’s why we are calling it
“Everything you ever wanted to know about colorectal cancer and were
afraid to ask”. Knowledge is power! While you are there,
visit our “Living Room” on the second floor of the Care Care
Institute.
Presented by Gordon Callender, MD, Board Certified
Colorectal Surgeon
Monday, March 28 at 6–8 PM - Linwood Clubhouse
Hear medical information concerning colorectal cancer:
What are the symptoms? How is it diagnosed? What are the latest
treatments? What is life like after colorectal cancer? Is there
anything I can do to prevent colorectal cancer? Can this be
hereditary? Come with your questions.
Presented by Andrew Renny, MD, Board Certified in
Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine
The Public Face of Colorectal Cancer: Remember when Katie Couric had a colonoscopy on
television? Her first husband, John Paul “Jay” Monahan 3rd died
in 1998 from Colorectal Cancer. He was 42. This prompted
Ms. Couric to “go public” about the importance of screening for this
relatively common cancer. In the years following her on air
screening there was a 20% increase in the number of colonoscopy
procedures. The trend was tagged “the Katie Couric Effect”.
Fast Facts: Colorectal
Cancer—commonly called colon cancer—is cancer of the colon (part of
the large intestine) or rectum. Colon cancer may begin as
non-cancerous polyps, which are growths on the lining of the colon or
rectum. These polyps can become cancerous.
According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 150,000
Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer each year, and an estimated
50,000 die from it. But this doesn’t have to be the case.
- Starting at age 50, men and women should be
screened regularly for colon cancer. Screening tests are not
painful, and are often covered by Medicare and health insurance.
- Regular screening tests can detect pre-cancerous
polyps. Removal of these polyps can prevent cancer from
developing.
- When detected and treated early, the five-year
survival rate is over 90%.
- If you have symptoms at any age, it is important to
get screened.
- Colonoscopy is one of the most effective screening
methods for finding and removing colon polyps—preventing colon
cancer before it starts
Different screening options are available. Talk with
your doctor about what kind of screening is right for you.
