Joan
& Tom Morey
Joan, a catastrophic care nurse at AtlantiCare, referred
patients to Gilda’s Club South Jersey. In 2006 she was diagnosed with
Duodenal cancer, had a portion of her pancreas removed and started on
chemotherapy. Taking her own advice, she and her husband Tom became
members. “Gilda’s Club has given me a
place to go and be with people who know what I am going through. I
participate in the Wellness Group, Reiki, yoga and on the dragon boat.
It has also been good for Tom—it has been a place where people understand
what he is going through too.” Joan’s cancer journey
continued in 2008 with the diagnosis of colon cancer and again in 2009 when
doctors found cancer along her incision. With her last round of chemo
complete she is looking forward to spending time with her family—including a
new grandchild—and going camping on Lake George as she and Tom have been
doing for the past 30 years. “Gilda’s Club—particularly the dragon boat team—have been
so supportive. It seems that they always know when to send a card, call
