On Tuesday, March 1 we are saluting nine people who have made a huge impact on Gilda’s Club South Jersey: our Founding Board Members: Anne Baker, Charlotte Berger, Christopher Clayton, Lynn Dooley, Michael Dooley, Barbara Gomes, Joan Freedman Meyers, Martha Moskowitz, and Donald Parker.   The festivities will be getting under way at 6 PM at Fin at the Tropicana.

In 2002, Gilda’s Club South Jersey was given a beautiful Clubhouse in Atlantic City.  Such a simple sentence—and what a huge effort it was!   Through a collaboration between Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Fund (RNS) and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority the original Clubhouse had multiple purposes: A Universal Design Model Home, the anchor to the new mixed housing development Carolina Gardens II and the RNS Showhouse at the Shore in the summer of 2002.

Martha Moskowitz, Charlotte Berger, Dorothea Meltzer,  our GCSJ Founders, and the entire RNS membership worked so hard to establish Gilda’s Club South Jersey, its Clubhouse and provide its first year of operating funds.

With Dorothea Meltzer’s careful consideration of the make-up of the new organization and its new Board of Trustees, the Board met for the first time in May 2002 and instantly began work to secure funding for our future.  No stone was left unturned.  For all nine aforementioned individuals, the mission was too important not to succeed.

In the ensuing nine years we have covered a lot of territory together.  The terrain has not always been smooth; but these nine individuals had the tenacity to keep working together to make sure that we would not only succeed but that we would grow our program and hold to our promise of having an open door to anyone touched by cancer in our region.

All nine have been invited to stay on as Advisory Board Members.  Their organizational wisdom—and their wisdom in general is too precious a commodity for us to lose.  They are a part of the heart and soul of Gilda’s Club South Jersey.

It is also time to bring in the next class of people who will continue to make sure that our program and mission thrive.  On March 1 we will also be welcoming new Board Members Margaret Avagliano, Eddie Davis, Michael Devlin, Eileen Gantert, Al Maiorani, Joseph Marchetti and Jesse Vitagliano.

As a thank you to our Red Door Society members, tickets are complimentary.  Other tickets are available for a $40 donation.  If you would like to attend the event and help us salute and welcome, please RSVP to Barbara at 609-926-2699.
